About Cloches

Cultivating Growth
For more than a century, French farmers have used simple bell-like cloches to cultivate young seedlings in the garden and protect them from weather and insects until they are well established.

Cloches are miniature greenhouses that capture the humidity and warmth ideal for germinating and fostering young plants. They’re easy to use. Just set a potted cutting or seedling under the glass bell in a location with bright, indirect light and follow the simple care instructions below. Once your plant is established, it can be transplanted indoors or out.

Showcasing Treasures
Cloches also make handsome showcases. Use them to display a prized potted plant or fill them with a vase of freshly cut garden flowers nestled in a bed of moss for a stunning tabletop centerpiece. Build a tableau under glass with your favorite found objects such as bird nests, seed pods, statuettes, rocks or shells. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!

About Terrariums

Terrarium

Terrariums make a stylish home for indoor plants. They come in many sizes and shapes—from miniature Victorian greenhouses that fit on a tabletop to simple glass cylinders, with or without lids.

Victorian-style Terrariums
These are ideal for potted plants that love humidity. Set your plants inside and watch them thrive on the abundance of warmth and moisture by following the simple care instructions below.

Watertight Terrariums
These all-glass terrariums can be planted directly. Just fill the bottom with about 3/4" of small-scale gravel and sprinkle it with a fine layer of charcoal chips. Top it off with a layer of fresh, well-draining potting soil at least 2" deep. Choose plants that like the same growing conditions and plant them directly into the soil, leaving room for each specimen to grow. Moisten the soil lightly, taking care to keep foliage dry. Add any ornamental objects you like such as rocks or statuettes to complete the setting. Then follow the simple care instructions below.

Caring for Your Indoor Garden

A Miniature Biosphere
Most cloches and terrariums flourish in a location with bright, indirect light and require very little care. They create their own self-sufficient biosphere that naturally recycles nutrients and moisture, so they need little water and require no fertilization. Soil can be refreshed once a year.

Watering
Completely encased environments retain the most moisture, and can usually go for a month or more without watering. The level of condensation inside your cloche or terrarium is a good barometer of your plants’ watering needs. When condensation stops, it’s time to water. Open environments (ones with no roof or lid) require more frequent watering. Use the moisture level in the soil as your guide. Whether your environment is open or closed, moisten the soil just slightly when watering and keep foliage dry to avoid rot. As your plants grow, keep them trimmed to the size and shape you want, and remove decaying leaves promptly.

Ventilation
Some plants, such as flowering varieties, need more air circulation than others, so check plant care instructions when deciding what species to plant and whether to choose a closed or open environment. Terrariums with removable lids or stoppers and cloches allow you to control how much air, moisture and humidity your plants receive.
